The Railway Forum is the voice for the whole of the rail industry. It is the only UK railway group that represents the majority of the industry. The Railway Forum's role is to act as the lobby group and think tank for the industry as a whole.

2008 Winners

Our 2008 awards attracted an extremely strong field of entrants, and shortlisting them was (as always!) difficult. Listed below are the winners and highly commended entries for each category.

Engineering and / or Safety

Winner: Rail Link Engineering, appointed by London & Continental Railways / Union Railways

London & Continental Railways / Union Railways, the company behind High Speed 1 (HS1) appointed Rail Link Engineering - a joint venture between Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra to manage the delivery of the project. On LCR's behalf, Rail Link Engineering has been made responsible for supervising the design and construction of HS1 and they honoured their commitment to deliver on time and within budget - a major achievement for something of this scale.

Highly Commended - Tracksure Ltd: For their range of patented fasteners that have been developed to prevent unintentional nut loosening, whilst improving operational efficiency.

Highly Commended - Tube Lines: For the design and manufacture of a fixed device that lets those working on the Underground track know the traction current status from a place of safety, virtually eliminating the risk of electrocution and near misses.

Environment

Winner: The First TransPennine Express / Siemens Transportation System

The First TransPennine Express / Siemens Transportation System has proven fuel savings for its Class 185 fleet of 51 three car units of up to 7% of total pre Eco-Initiative consumption. This converts to savings of more than 1.8m lites of fuel per day. This has been achieved through Eco-Mode – Eco Driving – Fuel messaging – Reduced engine running. This has all been delivered during the initial nine months of the project without requiring any capital investment of significant modification to the trains.

Innovation Of The Year - The John Armitt Award for Innovation

Winner: Network Rail

Network Rail in partnership with TfL and Mott MacDonald have recently pioneered the first ever major passenger Track Acces Option in the UK rail industry - The East London Line Access Option. The Track Access Option is a regulated contract that has been approved by the ORR and will enable TfL's significant investment in London railway infrastructure and the benefits that this will bring. First opened in 1869 as part of the East London Railway, it runs through the Thames Tunnel. TfL are now investing £1bn into the project to transform the route as an extension to the newly established London Overground Network.

Eurostar had a huge challenge on their hands to communicate the launch of services from St Pancras on 14th November 2007. By working closely with focus groups it soon realised that different groups of people would respond to the move in different ways. By developing and implementing a rolling communications programme of events and announcements, Eurostar's traveller's numbers rose by 21% to a record 2.17 million against the same period the previous year.

Small Scale Project

Winner: Kier Construction Ltd

Kier Construction Ltd who were the principal contractor on the huge project to replace an antique bridge at Ely, were put under pressure to resolve the work in record time whilst Ely was being used as a diversionary route over Christmas 2007. The standard time is usually 3 years split into 8 stages of a rail investment plan; this in the end was shrunk to one sixth of the normal time. In total 54 organisations were involved in the project including Network Rail as facilitating client and the Environmental Agency as principal regulator. Even the Inland Waterways Association were involved as their prestigious annual festival looked to be under jeopardy for a while.

Highly Commended - Docklands Light Railway: For the opening of Langdon PArk station in December 2007, marking the culmination of several years dedicated planning, breaking new ground in terms of funding, stakeholder collaboration, community consultation and station design.

Teamwork And Cross Industry Partnership

Winner: First TransPennine Express and Carlisle Cleaning and Support Services

TransPennine Express and Carlisle Cleaning and Support Services have worked together to ensure that rather than being 'just a 'contractor' to FTPE an integrated relationship has been developed based on shared values and goals of enhancing the complete customer experience. This 'One Team' approach offers joint training to employees in developing an NVQ in customer Service. Colleagues from both parties are made to feel involved in both businesses by the introduction of shared mess rooms and joint invitations to events held throughout the year. Carlisle act not only as a cleaning partner at stations across the FTPE network and on-board trains, but also uniquely as a dispatch partner at the key passenger stations of Leeds and Manchester Piccadily.
